Ms. G: Home in High Spirits
When Ms. G was admitted to the Kindred Seattle – Northgate Subacute Unit, she required help for all of her self-care and transfers. She had poor endurance, decreased strength and impaired balance. She required a lot of bed rest and could only sit up in the wheelchair for short periods of time. Additionally, Ms. G’s frequent shortness of breath and nervousness throughout the day impacted her participation in daily activities. She often required help for higher-level thinking tasks. During her treatment in the Subacute Unit at Kindred Seattle – Northgate, Ms. G underwent a program of physical, speech and occupational therapy to regain her strength, function and independence.
Upon discharge from the Subacute Unit, she was completely independent with all of her basic self-care such as dressing, bathing and toileting as well as higher level self-care including money management, laundry, house management, car transfers, planning events and cooking. She was able to walk with a four-wheeled walker, climb stairs and reach items off the floor independently. She rarely experienced shortness of breath and nervousness and learned the tools and techniques to successfully manage them on her own. She was also once again able to independently engage in high-level thinking Ms. G discharged in wonderful spirits, excited to return home and resume her daily activities with family and friends.
